Research
I am passionate about XR and people, and I enjoy researching it. Researching helps me fulfill my love for building something new, testing it with people, and learn what actually holds up. This also ensures I'm taking full advantage of my gradute education!
Collaboration in Projection-Based AR vs Head-Mounted VR
- Studied how collaboration changes when people can see each other naturally (projection-based AR) versus being isolated in headsets (VR).
- Used mixed methods (questionnaires + behavioral tracking + interviews) to understand co-presence and coordination.
- Found a real design tradeoff: immersive VR can feel fun and clear, but shared-space AR can better support teamwork cues.

AI-Generated Head Motion for Sign Language Avatars
- Built an AI system that adds realistic head movements to sign language avatars to restore non-verbal expressiveness.
- Trained using a hybrid imitation + reinforcement learning approach and evaluated perceived emotion/presence/naturalness.
- Results suggest head motion meaningfully changes how expressive and human the avatar feels.

Collaborative Locomotion as a Shared Resource
- Explored locomotion as a collaborative problem where groups continuously negotiate direction and speed together.
- Compared different group sizes in a counterbalanced study and measured both task performance and team experience.
- Observed a tradeoff between individual agency and emergent group coordination behaviors.

Hand-Based AR Typing Using Finger Joints
- Designed an AR typing method that maps keys onto finger joints/phalanges and uses thumb taps for input.
- Targets situations where discreet, low-attention input matters more than speed.
- Early results show it's learnable and promising for eyes-free or socially subtle interaction.
